BHP Profit Rises 14.7%

Annual profit from operations rose 22.1% to $24 billion from $19 billion last year.
BHP Billiton, the largest diversified mining group fiscal 2008 revenues jumped 26% to $59 billion on rising sales volumes for metals and increasing petroleum prices. In the period, sales volumes of copper, iron ore, energy coal, diamonds and alumina contributed $805 million of earnings before income and taxes. Revenues from petroleum gained 62.2% to $9.5 billion as the average realized oil prices was $96.27 per barrel from $63.87 a year earlier.

Woolworths 1H Earnings Rise 28%

Woolworths earnings rise reflects company's drive to lower cost, open new stores, and stronger economic environment.
The largest Australian retailer reported fiscal 2008 first half sales rise of 8.6% and earnings gain of 28%. Sales increased to $24 billion and earnings rose to $891.3 million. Woolworths declared an interim dividend of 44 cents, up from 35 cents in the first half of fiscal 2007. The company guided fiscal 2008 profit increase between 19% and 23%.

Sims Group Profit Declines 9.5%

Sims Group, largest recycler, reported a strong demand for ferrous export in the second quarter of this year.
Sims Group Limited reported fiscal 2008 first half profit decline of 9.5% from a year ago to $102.2 million on sales rise of 4% to $2.73 billion. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization were 3.6% lower at $211.3 million from the year ago. Net profit after tax was lower at 9.5% from a year ago to $102.2 million and earnings per share declined 10.5% to 81.1 cents. Interim dividend was lowered to 55 cents from 60 cents a year ago.

Virgin Blue Proft Slips, Higher Costs

Available Seat Kilometres increased by 3.2% to 11.33 billion ASKs, from 2006 and flown passengers increased 4.6% to 8.2 million.
virgin Blue, second largest airline, reported net income for the six months ended in December 2007 of $113.3 million, lower than $124.2 million from a year ago. Higher operating costs on routes to the Western U.S. location in direct competition hurt the profitability. half year results for the period to 31 December 2007. Revenue for the six months increased 8.1% from $1.12 billion to $1.21 billion with revenue per available seat kilometre increased 5.2% to 10.10 cents.

Oxiana Profit Declines

Capital costs for the development of Prominent Hill project are expected to rise to $1.1 billion and at Martabe gold project to $310 million.
Oxiana Ltd, mining comany, reported 2007 revenue of $1.1 billion, lower than $1.27 billion in 2006. Net income declined to $305 million from $553 million and earnings per share fell to 20.24 cents from 40.14 cents in 2006. The company is conducting feasability study for Martabe gold project in Indonesia and exlore for more resources in Prominent Hill project. The company plans to spend as much as $1 billion in capital expansion.

Volumes and Prices Lift Rio Tinto’s Profit

The global mining company posted a 9% jump in profit for the second half of fiscal 2007, partly thanks to record iron-ore production.
Rio Tinto’s full-year EBITDA rose 11% from a year ago to $13.9 billion as prices of all commodities rose above their 2006 levels, with the price of copper increasing by more than six times from last year. Net earnings for the year declined 2% from a year ago to $7.3 billion. The company again rebuffed a takeover bid by its rival BHP Billiton.

BHP First Half Profit Declines on Higher Costs

BHP reported first half profit declined 2.8% to $6.0 billion but earnings per share increased 2.8% to $1.06 on fewer shares.
BHP Billiton petroleum unit earnings climbed 22.3% to US$1.97 million for the first half ended Dec. 31, 2007 thanks to stronger production and higher prices for oil and gas outputs. Total production for the 6 months was 60.5 million BOE, up 5% from a year ago. Petroleum outputs enjoyed higher average realised prices in the quarter, with the biggest gain in the price of oil outputs at an average US$81.20 per barrel, up from US$63.77 a year ago.

News Corp. Boosts 2008 Earnings Outlook

Second quarter net profit was $832 million, up from $822 million a year ago.
NEWS Corporation reported a first half net profit of $1.56 billion versus $1.67 billion a year ago thanks to growth in the media group''s cable network performance. Operating income in the first six months of the fiscal year increased to $2.465 billion from $1.995 billion a year ago. For the second quarter, operating income rose 24% to $1.4 billion after revenue climbed by 10%. Fiscal 2008 operating income is expected to grow in the mid-teens range.
